Porsche Carrera Cup Germany - Race Report Round 8, Sachsenring
At the season finale of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany at the Sachsenring, Carlos Rivas (LU) won the title. The Luxembourger delivered a perfect performance on the 3.6 km long natural race track and was celebrated as the new champion in the amateur classification of Germany's strongest one-make cup after a double pole position, victory in Saturday's race and victory in Sunday's race. David Kolkmann experienced a roller coaster of emotions at the season finale. On Saturday, after a slip-up, he only finished in twentyth place, but on Sunday he finished fifth and thus secured one of the best results of the season. Tim Zimmermann also finished the season with a good performance, finishing eighth on Saturday and eleventh on Sunday.
Carlos Rivas travelled to the Sachsenring with a very tight points cushion of only 1.5 points ahead of his opponent Stefan Rehkopf. Already on rainy Friday, the 42-year-old showed a strong performance in free practice at difficult track conditions and drove the twelfth fastest time of all 30 pilots. In qualifying on Saturday morning he secured pole position in the class. The start of the 15th and penultimate race of the championship went almost ideally for Rivas in front of fully occupied grandstands, before a second of shock in the third lap almost meant the premature end of the title hopes. At the beginning of a safety car phase Rivas had to avoid a heavily braking competitor and, despite the high-speed evasive manoeuvre through the gravel and meadow, prevented a collision with the track's boundary. Afterwards he fought his way back to the front during the race, overtook his rival Rehkopf after a lap-long duel and did not let his victory be taken. The last race of the season on Sunday was much calmer. Rivas drove without incident to a safe start-finish-victory and secured the championship in the amateur classification of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany 2019 for himself and the BLACK FALCON Team TEXTAR.
For David Kolkmann, the season finale at the Sachsenring was an ups and downs of emotions. In free practice Kolkmann found no rhythm and only finished 17th. In qualifying on Saturday morning he was able to improve considerably and secured grid position eight for race 15 and rank 5 for the last race of the season. The start of the race on Saturday afternoon went well at first and Kolkmann was able to take the first corners without any damage before he slipped on the dirty outer lane in curve 5 and had to take the detour across the gravel bed. As a result, he dropped back to the end of the field and was finally waved down in 20th place. On Sunday things went much better: After the start Kolkmann fought in the leading group of the field. After losing his position in the meantime, he fought his way back to fifth place and thus showed his skills once again at the end of the race. David Kolkmann finished the season in tenth place overall after eight top-10 results.
Tim Zimmermann started almost perfectly into the race weekend. In difficult conditions he achieved the second best time in free practice and set absolute best times in sectors two and three. In qualifying he placed his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in seventh (Saturday) and ninth (Sunday) place. At the race on Saturday he finished in ninth place after a long fight with several cars. On Sunday a similar picture emerged: After a remarkable duel over several laps he crossed the finish line on position 11. Tim Zimmermann finished his second season in the Porsche Carrera Cup on position 12 in the drivers' standings.
